Submission time:2020-12-29
Project category:Entertainment space Design
Award winning designers: Shed.
Description:

Queensway Skate, Dine, Bowl is a London institution that first opened in 1930 (originally known as Queens Ice Club) So when current owners Bourne Capital and MEAT TM

Designated zonal and phased fit-out meant the venue could still operate it’s current bowling lanes and ice rink without business interference. Extensive works to excavate a new 5 lane VIP bowling space under the mansion block apartments above, as well as a separate ‘dive’ inspired sports bar off the ice rink. All built within a 10 week on-site timeframe. Smartly concealed with appropriate hoardings and graphic poster disguises. Enough for unsuspecting customers to until a big unveiling and reveal to much hysteria and delight.

The Liquor Lanes and VIP bowling, were inspired by the Big Lebowski and the infamous dudes dream scene from the cult 1998 Hollywood movie. A trippy black and white geometric wall and floor immersion with blood red bowling lanes takes you into a surreal optical illusion. One that has you questioning your gauge on the actual space and volumetric boundary! With its soft green ribbed VIP banquettes and MEAT TM animal caricatures adorning the walls in gold gilt frames - a nod to the cult language of both MEAT TM and that famous bowling movie. When you know you know right?!!

The Sin Bin Bar is a 3m wide, at it’s widest and tapering it’s length, narrow sports saloon bar located directly off the ice. Two caged banquette seating banks with ice sport memorabilia and MEAT TM artwork hanging from mesh panels sit either side of a makeshift metal clad bar underlie with red led lights. A long seat ledge with sash windows runs the full length of the bar opposite. The perfect setting to watch the ice games, catch the televised sports on TV or just put a 50p into the Juke Box and play your favourite Rock N Roll amplified and loud, whilst enjoying drinks and Dead Hippie burgers or Monkey Finger fries. Menu staples of Meat Liquor. Whatever your fancy you can’t help but feel like you’re in a true US dive bar and one that’s been around and worn into for sometime.

Further to this Shed supported the expansion of the restaurant area. Increasing it’s size by double due to demand and continuing the Meat Liquor interior approach of unapologetic graphic and ad hoc material layering to it’s interiors. Fly postering any given surface. Wall, ceiling tiles, brick walls with iconic MEAT TM graphics. The importance of light being more so the absence of light, creating the dark and atmospheric dining spaces for MEAT TM lovers.

The grand new front entrance acts as a celebration to the well known venue. A celebration in canopy architecture of times past with a new spin in the historic part of town. Whilst reminiscent of nostalgia it’s not all it seems once you enter and down the stairs to an underground venue of weighted balls and blades sports. A world of competitive leisure, bar and dine all with the MEAT TM takeover in the style synonymous to their brand. Without doubt you know you’ve entered that world and done in the MEAT TM way!
