LOOP Series embodies a uniform idea that is robust enough to define all aspects for furniture design - ergonomics, aesthetics and structural balance. The approach for this series is to make a piece of furniture using one material which in turn drives the team to achieve a symbiosis between digital design and Indian craftsmanship. The fluid aesthetics add value to the space that is sometimes hard to fathom in the first look, but gradually grows on you. Such a furniture is a timeless sculptural piece, and thus, is not limited to current market trends; not trapped to respond to market size and user demands. The design intention for LOOP Series bridges a huge gap in the market for accent, luxurious, global and yet functional furniture. A distinctive process of wood-carving is explored to achieve the characteristic complex curvature; a vernacular technique primarily celebrated in intricate wooden temple architecture. Spread over several days of handwork by trained artisans, consistently carving and scalping, a very thin surface starts to emerge from the rough form. It is further sanded for days to achieve minimum desired thickness, with an understanding of its structurally viability. The dynamic direction of Birch grains and structural balance of the material come together to create a seamless surface optimized to a thickness that makes it self-supporting. We have been able to guide the design process and find a balance between Indian carpentry know-how and computational design tools in a unique way. Such innovation aids to make the design global whilst using local vernacular methods. Through mindful systematic thinking, any complex surface can be built using the craft skills and available technology at hand. A novel blend of digital fabrication techniques and craft knowledge of material guides the LOOP Series to explore further and engage in an iterative process with multiple prototypes to achieve the most efficient form.
